The days after…..

Well, the family started returning their homes.  We spent the day too-ing and fro-ing from the airport to drop kids off.

We headed over to the Rob and Casey’s later in the day and had leftovers at their house.  We also got to meet Jack, their dog, who bolted out the front door at the first opportunity and took off like a shot down the street and around the corner out of sight.  Robert, then groaned and took off after the little dog. After 20 minutes of chasing the dog IN THE RAIN, he finally tackled Jack and brought him home.

We settled in and had leftovers that we had brought with us, for dinner.  After a few hours of chatting, we said our goodbyes and left the bride and groom to settle down.

We left the following day to head up to Cooktown stopping in at Kuranda only long enough to see the quaint little railroad station.

We headed up to Mareeba and stopped in at Skybury for coffee and lunch.  This is the place where the bathroom has a fish pond and is exposed to the elements.  I also found a rather large frog in the toilet when I flushed it.  It had been hiding under the rim and when the water came out, it had a hard time holding on.

Well, once lunch was finished we started back on the road to Cooktown only to be stopped about 40klms from the town itself.

This is what met us.  There were cars and trucks everywhere waiting for the waters to recede.

And after all the jokes about Ron attaching a rope around Chris so he could drag the car across, we decided to turn around and head back.  But instead of going to Mareeba, we decided to head to Port Douglas instead.

Which was a VERY NICE CHOICE!!  Thanks to Pam for the suggestion!!  The bed was wonderful, the meals were wonderful, a person couldn’t have asked for more.

We tried to get to Cooktown the next day and we made it through.

There had been so much rain in the past few weeks, that we missed out on the Daintree and Cape Tribulation part of the journey.  All of the rivers are swollen and some of the creeks unpassable.  But then this IS the tropics and it IS the wet season.

We passed this place three times.  The first time at night where it was close to 2ft.  The second time, a foot deep, and the third time, it was finally down where the road was showing again.

There’s several billabongs around the area.  We stopped and had a look at this one where there were a few cows and one rather large bull.

And Voila!  the road is cleared today.  We went in and had a wonderful lunch on the river.  We wandered around the town and saw a museum on the local history.

Once a bank, it now houses the museum.

One cannot go to Cooktown without seeing the lighthouse and the views.  The sea was rather muddy from the river washing in to it.

Once we finished here in Cooktown, we headed back to our unit at Port Douglas.  Tomorrow we head out to Undarra Lava Tubes.
